Where:

• $\Delta v$ = change in velocity of the rocket
• $v_e$ = effective exhaust velocity (the speed at which the propellant is expelled)
• $m_0$ = initial total mass of the rocket (including fuel)
• $m_f$ = final mass of the rocket after the fuel has been burned
